Tales of Tenure Terror: Predatory Journal Owns Itself
Predatory journals are a fascinating scam and one that never seems to go away. Likely because it preys on the anxiety and arbitrary nonsense that fuels academic success. I just learned that two computer scientists took it up to petty level 100 (I approve) and submitted a paper that was nothing but “Take me off your fucking email list,” INCLUDING graphs and charts. It got accepted and invited to publish. Read more of the details here.
It’s bad enough that authors in journals do not get paid, but PAYING to be published is a war crime.
I mine info for this column from Twitter, but lately, I’ve been back on Reddit. (Big mistake. HUGE.) There’s a subreddit for professors which seems to largely complain about students. It’s not surprising, but it’s astounding to some profs that excelling in their class is not their student’s number one priority life. Especially now. Here’s a real peach:
Anyone with a BA can sign up, and this is kind of the weeder class. But damn. Students who can’t tell the difference between peer-review and a random website, want to research a topic that has either been done to death or is the culmination of a lifetime of work, and/or are still letting very long quotes do the work for them... I’m so done. And the all too rare good ones can’t make up for yet another bad one.
Maybe…you should teach this in your class? I have always maintained that if you are a teacher and all or most students are not doing well, the problem is YOU. And you already know my feelings about shitting on students publicly.
