I’ve been delinquent with research for this for academic reasons (I’m officially a doctoral CANDIDATE btw). There have been several stories that have hit, for which there has been extensive writing on it. Here’s a roundup:
The Dean of the School of Architecture at City College resigned after nine months, calling out the actual issues that failed her and the school.
The lack of meaningful support—not lip service, of which there's always a surfeit—meant my workload was absolutely crippling. No job is worth one's life and at times I genuinely feared for my own. Race is never far from the surface of any situation in the U.S. Having come directly from South Africa, I wasn't prepared for the way it manifests in the U.S. and quite simply, I lacked the tools to both process and deflect it. The lack of respect and empathy for Black people, especially Black women, caught me off guard, although it's by no means unique to Spitzer. I suppose I'd say in the end that my resignation was a profound act of self-preservation.
So many times, hiring someone because they will be good at “improving diversity” is an excuse to throw all the responsibility on that person and pay them shit, because someone who wants to do that wants to do that out of a sense of principles, and the money doesn’t matter. Do you know what would work? Or at least help? Pay multicultural/inclusion staff six figures and a wide budget. They will stay longer and actually make a change.
2 . Historian Lara Burnett’s tweets about Mike Pence were picked up by the disgusting troll vultures at Campus Reform. Instead of supporting her, the President of her colleagues wrote to the whole campus condemning her.
Collin College is aware of the hateful, vile and ill-considered Twitter posts by one of its faculty members. As a community, we cannot and will not ignore them. We deeply apologize for the offense her comments have created. The faculty member’s expressed views are not consistent with the values of Collin College, particularly our Core Values of dignity and respect. Further, the views were not conveyed in any manner we wish members of our faculty and staff to express themselves.
It’s exactly what Campus Reform wanted to happen. The kicker is that the President did not even speak with her before sending out a cowardly all-campus email. This is a good summary of the chain of events.
3. An Eglish instructor innocently asked for recs for what dramatic works she can use in her English class, and someone else with a theater degree claimed that since she does not have a Theater degree, she should have refused to teach the class. REFUSED! So what, the theater degree holders can be called in to be exploited as adjuncts?
4. Nate Silver gonna Nate Silver.
