There are several “consultants” or businesses that claim to help people finish their PhD. This is different from a writing coach or editor. These people feed on the anxiety of the students who then pay hundreds of dollars for someone to give them advice as such:

You should not be afraid to reach out to someone to help with your dissertation or research. Guess what? It is hard. And schools don’t always teach you how to do it. But it should be someone from your department, your field, or semi-related. And if you are going to pay someone, let them at least work with you one on one and have eyes on your actual work.
