I Miss My MTV: Too Young to Fall In Love
I MISS MY MTV is about my lifelong obsession with music videos.
“Too Young to Fall In Love” by Motley Crue makes me hornified: horny but horrified. Here is baby Motley Crues trying to look tough and also be funny but he dramatic. The horrified is from the intense exotification of Chinese culture. I’d like to go back in time and bring Edward Said to a little talk.
Of course, the Crue are pioneers of hair metal, which I love both for the music, the memories of sexual awakening, and the camp of it all. These men were so hetero that they could dress like women but still be hot, because…NO HOMO!
Obviously, now, I can appreciate why I find the androgyny of it so attractive. The tough guy attitude helps too. Motley Crue also fascinates me because they were severely exploited by their record company. Several members had heartbreaking addictions but it made them more appealing so rec execs just fed them more drugs and booze.
Back to this song/video: This really shows off Nikki Sixx’s songwriting and the great guitar hook. The video is about….a young girl who is kidnapped and brought into the world of Chinese gangsters? But also some sort of magic mysticism? And the Crue tries to save her, but they get attacked by a gang and then they just give up? I don’t know and maybe I don’t want to know.
The secret agents have (not too secret) equal signs on their faces meaning…they support math? They are VIP donor to the Human Rights Campaign?
Shortly after this was released, Vince Neil was high and got into a car accident, killing several members of the band Hanoi Rocks. He did not go to jail nor do I believe he stopped using after this. I mention this because a favorite obscure genre is celebrities who have killed someone unintentionally.
