When you have nothing to say, just stare
The Hills is back on tonight, and usually I hate a sequel, but I have never needed this more in my life than right now.
Do you have tiny, inconsequential moments of popular culture that stick with you? For me, it’s on the original Hills when Stephanie Pratt was interviewing for an internship with Kelly Cutrone and told her that she wanted to design handbags. Later, she didn’t know how to answer a phone.
Others: Real World Seattle when David screams, “I love you Keira!” in the car to the producer he was dating; in Vanderpump Rules when Scheana freaks out at her wedding planner and yells, “I have to do my dollar dance!”; in the short lived Pretty Wild when Alex Neirs calls Mary Jo Sales at Vanity Fair to complain about the article written about her…and these are just reality show instances.
Back to The Hills: What struck me the most about this show is the idea of labor; these people did not have a concept of work. Heidi complains that her job is full-time, at the first event Lauren does for Teen Vogue, she deliberately fucks up. Meanwhile, they depend of the labor of bartenders, bouncers, servers, salespeople to give them scenes and things to do. They hang out at these establishments like it IS their job; meaning, bored, restless, out of obligation.
