as a treat
Despite everything, I’ve received several pieces of good news, of which I’ll parcel out it is the only good news for a while.
My first academic publication: I never intended Sweet Valley High to be the subject of any research, but here we are. I wrote about the books, my blog, someone who did research on my bog, and my reaction to that research. Publishing is the ultimate goal and sign of success in academia, so I guess I am playing the game. I don’t know how long, but it’s available to the public without a subscription:
“Seeing Double: Collecting Sweet Valley High”
Patrick and I continue to record. If we don’t record our podcast, the virus wins! This week it’s about Valerie Solanas, misunderstood folk hero.
From the SCUM Manifesto:
Having no sense of right and wrong, no conscience, which can only stem from having an ability to empathize with others … having no faith in his non-existent self, being unnecessarily competitive, and by nature, unable to cooperate, the male feels a need for external guidance and control. So he created authorities – priests, experts, bosses, leaders, etc. – and government. Wanting the female (Mama) to guide him, but unable to accept this fact (he is, after all, a Man), wanting to play Woman, to usurp her function as Guider and Protector, he sees to it that all authorities are male. There’s no reason why a society consisting of rational beings capable of empathizing with each other, complete and having no natural reason to compete, should have a government, laws or leaders.
What is this? A semi-regular newsletter about being a culture studies graduate student. Do you like it? Great. Please share it widely.
What to look forward to:
Academia shenanigans
More Showgirls, the novelization
Recommendations of culture to consume at home
Possibly some fiction…?
